Ann Pickens, age 84, passed away on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at her home. She is survived by her husband John, married for 64 years.
Ann taught English for 35 years at East Hartford High School and Penney High School. She was Chairman of the English Department at Penney High for its last 6 years.
She graduated from Allegheny College and held a Masters Degree in English and a sixth year professional degree in School Administration from UConn.
She is also survived by her three children and their spouses, Sherman Scott Pickens and Jamie Solak of Arlington, VA, Pamela (Pickens) Monroe of Avon, CT and James Monroe of Plainville, Clark Pickens and Kimberly Blake-Pickens of Windsor; ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Ann was very active at First Church in Windsor, serving in many capacities as Deacon, and on various boards. She sang in the choir, rang in the Hand Bell Choir, and volunteered in the office. After family, she was dedicated to her students and her church. Her goal for her life was to leave the world a better place than she found it.
Calling hours will be held from 5 - 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2017 in the Parker Room of First Church in Windsor, 107 Palisado Ave., Windsor. A memorial service will be held at First Church at 11a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2017, with the Reverend Nicole Yonkman presiding. Burial in Palisado Cemetery will immediately follow the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First Church Music Committee. Carmon Funeral Home of Windsor has care of her arrangements.
