Cathy DeMarco (Vendel) passed away peacefully on January 17th, 2018 after a long battle with ALS. Cathy was born in Meadville, PA to the late Albert and Dolores (Meissner) Vendel on November 3rd, 1957. Cathy enjoyed a happy childhood in Conneautville, PA. visiting the farms of grandparents George and Gertrude Meissner and grandparents John and Mary Vendel, where many aunts, uncles and cousins would gather. Cathy is survived by one sister Mary Jane Vendel of Bend, Oregon and two brothers John Vendel of Arlington Heights, IL and Michael (Heather) Vendel of Geneva, IL. Cathy is also survived by loving nieces Wendy Weniger, Tammy Stepp, Megan McFarland (god-daughter), Lisa Hanley and nephew Mike Bittick.
After graduating from Conneautville H.S. Cathy moved to the Philadelphia area where she was employed by Elwyn Institute as a counselor and met former husband Robert DeMarco. She later ran her own business supporting local colleges. Cathy was an avid Phillies fan and rarely missed watching a game. She was also a Certified Master Gardener working long hours in the garden and taking long walks in the local park with her close friends. Cathy loved to travel and often spoke fondly of her I last trip touring Italy. One of her favorite activities was sitting on the beach by the ocean reading a book and enjoying nature. Cathy was a wonderful baker and would send each sibling a box of home made cookies every Christmas, a true family tradition.
Cathy will always be remembered as a kind, loving soul and will be sadly missed by her family and friends. In lieu of flowers or memorials the family requests donations be made to the ALS Association Greater Chicago Chapter, located at 220 W. Huron St. #4003, Chicago, IL 60654, phone 312-932-0000.
