James O. Getty, 75, of Scottsdale, AZ, formerly of Meadville, passed away at Arizona Shining Star Hospice Facility, Phoenix, AZ, on Sunday August 27, 2017, after a brief illness. He was born in Meadville on December 17, 1941 and was the son of Jim and Leora (Maloney) Getty of Meadville. Jim was a 1959 graduate of Saegertown High School and a 1963 graduate of Alliance College, Cambridge Springs, where he was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves for six years and was a life-long member of Twelve Apostles Lutheran Church, Saegertown.
Before moving west in the early 70s, Jim was employed by the Tom Deloe Realty Agency (Meadville), Joy Manufacturing (Franklin) and the Carrier Air Conditioning Corporation (Akron, OH.) He was a small business owner in Arizona and established The Handyman Service in Scottsdale which he operated for over 45 years. He was active in the Scottsdale political arena for several years, taking many opportunities to write letters to local newspaper editors to express his opinions on various issues. He proudly established a series of horseshoe tournaments area-wide for the local Moose Fraternal Lodges. Jim was also an avid golfer and enjoyed extensive travels with Barbara.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his longtime partner of 43 years Barbara Adams and her daughters, Diane Higbie (Ed) and Jennifer Adams (Robert) and grandchildren Tyler, Kendall and John. Jim is also survived by his sister Alice Dalmaso of Saegertown and her son Jay as well as his brother Richard Getty (Ijenna) of Cambridge Springs and their daughter Morgan.
A memorial service will be held at the graveside of Jim's parents in the Saegertown Cemetery on Saturday, September 23 at 5:30 pm. Pastor Mark A. Fischer of Twelve Apostles Lutheran Church will officiate.
