Katherine Marie Melvin, 96, of 201 Forest Street, Cambridge Springs, PA, passed away on May 14, 2018, after a period of declining health. She was born on March 30, 1922, in Blooming Valley the daughter of Lyle and Saloma Theuret Smith. Katherine was a hard worker who devoted her life to care for her farm and family. She was a humble, resourceful homemaker, a fantastic cook, and was mechanically inclined. Katherine had worked at the Riverside Inn, the Presbyterian Home, the Cambridge Springs Elementary and High School cafeterias and retired from the custodial department of Saegertown High School. She doted on her grandchildren, loved the outdoors, liked traveling, enjoyed gardening and had a green thumb.
She married her husband, Archie W. Melvin on September 18, 1940, and he preceded her in death on October 10, 1982. She was also preceded in death by twin sister, Ida Louise Edge on April 15, 2018; infant son, Richard Lee; brother, Carl Smith; stepbrothers: Frank Humes, Merle Humes, and Harold Humes; stepsister, Mattie Briggs; great granddaughter, Katelyn Ferris; and son-in-law, Dennis Doutt.
She is survived by son, Larry E. Melvin and his wife, Audeen of Cambridge Springs; daughter, Carole Melvin Doutt of Venango; son, Dennis C. Melvin of Cambridge Springs; sister, Lela Nageotte of Meadville; six grandchildren: Jeffrey S. Melvin and his wife, Mary Jane of Willoughby Hills, OH; Robert A. Melvin and his wife, Robin of Cambridge Springs; Diana Ferris and her husband, Randy of Cambridge Springs; Vanessa Doutt of Titusville; Chanda Rice and her husband, Charles of Saegertown; Olivia Piatt and her husband, Josh of Akron, N.Y.; thirteen great grandchildren: Jenna, Jaclyn, and Rachel Melvin; Alyssa, Connor, and Gwennyth Melvin; Nicholas and Jenna Pearson; Jarred and Jacob Ferris; Owen and Kasey Krepps; Jackson Piatt; and Alec Rice.
Friends are invited to call at the Van Matre Funeral Home in Cambridge Springs on Wednesday, May 16, 2018, from 4 to 7 p.m. and on Thursday, May 17, from 10 until 11 a.m. when a funeral service will be held.
