Robert Paul "Bob" Thomas, 91, of Cortland, Ohio, departed this earth on Sunday, September 10, 2017, in Bradenton, Florida, to be reunited with the love of his life, Joan E. Thomas.
He was born October 16, 1925 in Meadville, Pennsylvania, the son of the late George Thomas and Bertha McNamara Thomas.
Bob married Joan Eves Thomas in 1952. He was the father of two loving children, Robin (Lawrence) Robinson of Bradenton, FL, and Daniel (Brenda) Thomas of Windsor, CO. He is also survived by four grandchildren and their families, Lawreace (Alfredo) Hernandez and great-granddaughters, Josie Joan and Graciela, of Bradenton, FL; Bradley (Stephanie) Thomas and great-grandson, Cruz, and great-granddaughter, Haley, of Neptune, NJ; Christy (Mark) Strub and great-grandsons, Jack and Maxim, and great-granddaughter, Rhone EmilyAnn, of Austin, TX; Lawrence Robinson, III,and his fiancé, Ashley Bush, of Cortland, OH. He is also survived by his brother, Atty. R. Charles (Roberta) Thomas, of Meadville, PA, and his sister, Marlene Santanello, of New Jersey, and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joan, in 2012, and his brother, Karl.
Bob was a 1943 graduate of St. Agatha's High School in Meadville. After his graduation from high school in 1943 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served from 1943 to 1946 and after his enlistment in the U.S. Navy he was assigned to serve as a signalman on a patrol rescue vessel known as the USSPCE852 in the South Pacific. Upon his discharge from the U.S. Navy in 1946 he enrolled at St. Bonaventure University and attended St. Bonaventure for two years, eventually returning to Meadville, Pennsylvania where he finished his education at Allegheny College in 1950. After graduation from Allegheny College he secured employment with Westinghouse Corporation in Meadville, Pennsylvania and eventually moved to Warren, Ohio where he became employed by Taylor Winfield Corporation from 1958 to 1991 as Manager of Purchasing with that corporation. After his retirement from Taylor Winfield he worked as a starter at the Trumbull Country Club prior to 2012 and at Tamer Win Golf Course from 2014 until the fall of 2016. He was a member of BPO Elks Lodge #295 and American Legion #540.
Bob was an active member of St. Robert's Parish. He was a volunteer for the St. Vincent De Paul Society. He was also nominated to the 2012 Athletic Hall of Fame for John F. Kennedy High School in Warren where he was involved with the athletic and band boosters for many years. After his graduation from Allegheny College and while working in Meadville, Pennsylvania he coached boys basketball at St. Agatha's High School. He was an avid fan of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Cleveland Indians. While living in Meadville he participated in, loved and excelled in fast pitch softball and was a member of a team that won a State championship.
Memorial services will be held in Bradenton, Florida. Services will also be held in Ohio at a later date.
