Betty's Story

Text size

Betty J. Andrews, of Cochranton, Pa., died on Sunday, Sept. 10, 2017 at Meadville Medical Center. She was 91.
She was born on Oct. 14, 1925, in Franklin, Pa., the daughter of Samuel Gilbert and Anna Novak Hagerty.
Betty spent much of her childhood helping in the family's various stores, and caring for her younger siblings. Her first job away from home was at Westinghouse in Sharon, Pa., where she helped with the war efforts assembling torpedos. She married Roland D. Martin in 1941. She attended the Sharpsville Church of the Nazarene. After the death of her husband in 1962, she worked very hard raising her children, working at Thrift Drug Store and General Nutrition at the Shenango Valley Mall. While working at the U.S. Post Office in Meadville, she met William Andrews, whom she married in 1971. They were married 44 years until his death in 2015.
Betty and Bill were very active in the Church of the Nazarene in Meadville. Betty led a ministry at several local nursing homes and received the Distinguished Service Award in 2015 for her years of service to the church. The highlight of their summers was to attend the Church of the Nazarene Family camp. They enjoyed a camping trip to the western states visiting family and friends.
Betty enjoyed gardening, especially flowers, and canned what they grew. She enjoyed baking and entering her work in the Cochranton and Crawford County Fairs. She decorated countless cakes for friends. She enjoyed working crossword puzzles and completed her last one a few days before her death. She was a champion speller and participated in several local Active Aging Spelling Bees and went to a Pa. State competition in Harrisburg. She was a lifelong Pittsburgh Pirates fan and watched almost every game.
Betty is pre-deceased by her brothers Silas, Albert, Gilbert, and Wallace Hagerty, and sisters Louella Rutledge and Grace Bebech.
Her sister Ramona Jenney survives in Winter Haven Florida.
Also surviving is her son, David Martin, of Sharpsville, and his children Jennifer, of Fredonia, Jonathan, of Maryland, and Donald, of Sharpsville. Also her daughter Patricia Andrews (Ron) of Meadville, and their children Corianne of San Diego, and son Zachary (Becky) of Indiana, Pa. and great grandson, Ian.
Also surviving are sons Marvin (Mary) of Indiana, Harold of Illinois, David (Susan) of Pleasantville, and Iris Geer (David) of Meadville, and all together 17 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Also surviving is her beloved dog Daisy and her cat Ginger.
Her family would also like to thank and recognize her loving caretaker-companions who made her last years pleasant and comfortable: Michelle, Darla, Barb, Peggy, Alex, Jan, Carol, and Linda, and sister-in-law Sally, and Larry who helped with the driveway.
Visitation will be Friday, Sept.15 at the Ryan M. Warren Funeral Home, 544 Chestnut St. Meadville, 6-8 p.m. The funeral will be at the Meadville Church of the Nazarene, 851 Washington St., on Sat. Sept. 16 at noon, with visitation from 11-12:00.
