Eddie's Story

Eddie J. Burkey, 79, of Fort Myers, FL passed away at home on Friday, April 21, 2017.
Mr. Burkey, originally from Trenton, MO, son of the late Eddie and Mary Burkey, made his home in Meadville, PA with his wife, the former Yvonne (Bonnie) LaBash in 1975 before moving to Fort Myers, FL in 2010.
Mr. Burkey served in the United States Marine Corps for 21 years (1956-1977) 'The Few. The Proud. The Marines.' and retired from the USMC as a Gunnery Sergeant -SemperFI! He was a life time member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and also belonged to the Department of Veteran Affairs.
While in Meadville, PA he worked at Meadville Forging. He was a member of USA Dance - Ballroom dancing and he also belonged to the Meadville Bowling League. He joined the Elks in both Meadville and Fort Myers/Estero. He was a parishioner of St. Agatha Catholic Church in Meadville and St. John XXIII Catholic Church in Fort Myers, FL where he was a member of the Confraternity of the Most Holy Rosary.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Charles, two sisters- Jean and Betty, one child and two grandchildren.
In addition to his wife Yvonne (Bonnie Burkey) of almost 50 years, he was survived by Mark Burkey of Centennial, CO, Matthew Burkey and wife - Paula, of San Jose, CA, Christian Burkey and wife -Melissa of Suwanee, GA, Krista Fuller and husband - Victor (Chip) of Meadville, PA, Todd Burkey and wife- Lorraine of San Jose, CA and 12 grandchildren - Kyle Burkey, Jenna Burkey, Alyssa Burkey, Nicolas Burkey, Tobias Burkey, Abigail Burkey, Ashleigh Burkey, Adam Burkey, Claudia Fuller, Nicalette Fuller, Madelyn Burkey, and Evan Burkey.
Memorial Service for Eddie J. Burkey will be held on Friday, May 19, 2017 at St John XXIII Catholic Church, 13060 Palomino Lane, Fort Myers, FL 33912. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. followed by interment in the church Memorial Garden. Luncheon will be in St. John XXIII Community room where we will celebrate the memory and life of this wonderful and precious man- husband, father, and grandfather - AKA Pop Lobster.
