Janice's Story

Text size

Janice Y. Werneth, age 74, of Meadville, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 15, 2017 after a brief illness. Janice was born on November 3, 1942 in Meadville, PA to the late James C. Andrews and Iris (Seal) Andrews. Janice was married to Terry Werneth of Meadville who survives her.
Janice was a 1960 graduate of Meadville High School. She graduated from Edinboro University in 1964 with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Art Education. For 30 years Janice taught art for Crawford Central School District as (Mrs. Washburn). She was an Art teacher in the Elementary level as well as the Jr. High until her retirement in 1997.
Janice's many artistic accomplishments are a reflection of her curious, creative mind. She played piano for several churches, painted murals, taught line dancing, and created Native American Prayer feathers. She also did calligraphy for the Ducks Stamp competition for the PA State Game Commission. In the 70's, she ran a sign business (with her then husband Robert Washburn), painting signs and lettering trucks but her most favorite memory was painting each of the original carousel animals at Conneaut Lake Park, and hand lettering the signs throughout the Park. One of her most cherished creation was a prayer path. A wooded area at the farm, dedicated to her parents Jim and Iris Andrews. A space for people to walk the path, self reflect and commune with nature. Janice's artwork focused on nature and Native American Themes. She was known for originating feather painting, painting detailed wildlife scenes on turkey and peacock wing feathers. Her artwork has been collected and exhibited nationally and internationally.
Janice was a member of The First Baptist Church of Linesville, a life-long member of the Watson Run Church and The Watson Run Woman's Club.
Surviving Janice in addition to her husband are; her son; Shawn Washburn of Meadville and NYC, daughter; Sharla Buzzard and her husband Derrick of Conneaut Lake and two granddaughters; Shaylan and Shelby Buzzard, her sister; Karen Peterson of Meadville and many nieces and nephews.
Janice is preceded in death by her parents and a brother-in-law Albert Peterson.
