Estelle "Teddie" Roofner Cowan of Grove City, formerly of Meadville, passed away May 12, 2020, at home with her family by her side. She was born August 6, 1930 in Meadville, the second of five children, born to Lorenz Jack and Adelaide (MacMillian) Roofner.
She attended St. Agatha's School for ten years and graduated from Meadville High School in 1948.
With her father having a funeral business and living over the funeral home, she learned early the lessons of service, compassion and caring.
After graduating from high school, she enrolled at Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon) in Pittsburgh, where she met her husband Bob. She was a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority and a cheerleader for four years for basketball and football. Teddie graduated in 1952 with a B.S. Degree in Education.
She and Bob were married on August 23, 1952.
She taught in Pittsburgh Public Schools while her husband completed his senior year.
They lived in Sharon, Columbus, OH, and Stoneboro, before moving to Grove City in 1963.
She was involved in many organizations & as a volunteer at the library. After her youngest child started school she was a substitute teacher for 13 years at the Grove City Middle School. Also, she was an active member of Beloved Disciple Parish, teaching CCD classes, serving on parish council, & as a Eucharistic Minister. She was a member of the Rosary Altar Society, served on the funeral lunch committee & the Apple Dumpling Gang.
She dearly loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and attending many of the events in which they participated.
She loved to walk, play bridge, read and travel while enjoying her many friends.
She is survived by her husband, Robert N. Cowan; two sons, Robert W. Cowan (Kathy), Meadville: John D. Cowan (Sheryl) Titusville; two daughters, Linda M. Johnson, Grove City; Christine A. Rigby, Grove City; twelve grandchildren; Courtney Pawlak; John P. Cowan (Josie); Gregory Cowan, Kelly Davis (Andy); Lindsay Cox (Michael), Derek Cowan; Michael Johnson (Alexis), Casey Johnson, Patrick Johnson; Nicole Severyn (Ryan), Alex Rigby, Shane Rigby; step granddaughter Jenny Todd (Skyler); Eleven great grandchildren: Alexa & Robert Pawlak; Andrew, Patrick & Samuel Davis; Mabel Cowan; Reid & Mia Johnson; Benjamin & Connor Severyn; Rory Cox: step great grandchild Annika Todd, a sister, Nancy R. Frey, Meadville; and a brother, Christopher Roofner (Debbie), Pleasantville; sister in law Patty Foster, Stoneboro
She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Mary Ann Collins & Rita R. Fahr.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Church of the Beloved Disciple or the charity of your choice
A private family service will be held in Cunningham Funeral Home, Inc., 306 Bessemer Ave., Grove City on Monday, May 18, 2020.
Burial will follow in Greendale Cemetery. St. Agatha's section, Meadville, PA.
A public memorial mass will be held at the Church of The Beloved Disciple at a later date.
