Harold W. Schmidt
Harold W. Schmidt, age 85, of Saegertown, passed away on March 1, 2019, surrounded by his family. He was born on March 1, 1934, in Girard, PA. He was the son of the late Richard and Helen (Harmon) Schmidt. He graduated from Rice Avenue Union High School, Girard, PA, in 1952.
Harold is survived by his wife of 58 years, Lucille M (Niebauer); 10 children: Sarah Hansen (Keith), Gerald Schmidt, Anne Selleny (Thomas), Kathleen Mariani (Scott), John Schmidt (Brenda), Robert Schmidt, Rebecca Leandro (Paulo), Mary Schmidt, David Schmidt (Jennifer) and Rodney Schmidt (Danielle); 24 grandchildren; 1 sister, Carol SanFrotello; and 2 sisters-in-law: Patsy (Clancey) Schmidt and Elaine (Niebauer) Schmidt.
Harold was preceded in death by 3 infant children; his parents; siblings: Edward Schmidt, Helen Penza, George Schmidt and Joseph Schmidt; 2 brothers-in-law: Chester Penza and Louis SanFrotello; and 1 sister-in-law, Betty (Craig) Schmidt.
Harold was a life-long dairy farmer. He was a board member and president of PENNCREST School District for 18 years, in addition, he was on the board of directors at the Crawford County Vocational School. Harold was the leader of the Saegertown 4-H Beef Club for over 20 years. He was a member of the US Army and served in the Korean War. Harold played semi-pro football for the Erie Lakers. He was a member of St. Philp Roman Catholic Church in Crossingville, where he served as a lector for many years. He was also a member of The Knights of Columbus. He was a lover of all animals, the Cleveland Indians and the Cleveland Browns.
Family and Friends may call on Thursday, March 7, from 2-4pm and 6-9pm, at Mattera Funeral Home, 188 East State Street, Albion, PA. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, March 8, at 10am at St. Philip Roman Catholic Church (Crossingville) 25797 State Highway 98, Edinboro, PA.
Burial will follow at St. James Cemetery with full military honors.
